Sciatica

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica refers to pain that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back, through the hips and buttocks, and down each leg. It’s often caused when the nerve is compressed or irritated.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain – Sharp, burning or shooting pain that usually starts in the lower back or buttock and travels down one leg. The pain is often worse in the leg than in the back.
  • Numbness or Tingling – These may be felt along the leg or foot.
  • Weakness – You might notice weakness or difficulty moving the leg or foot.
  • Aggravated by Movement – Sitting, bending, coughing, or sneezing can make the pain worse.

Symptoms can range from mild and occasional to severe and persistent. Sciatica is best managed through a personalised approach based on what’s causing it. In most cases, surgery is not needed and can be assessed and managed with physio.  Surgery is usually only considered when other treatments haven’t helped, or if symptoms are severe and getting worse. Urgent surgery may be required if there’s significant weakness or loss of bowel/bladder control.

Relieve pain, restore movement, revive life.

Our physios and massage therapists are very experienced in managing people with sciatica.

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, we carry out a detailed assessment, give you a clear explanation of what we think is causing your pain and then a step by step personalised plan for managing it.  The aim is to improve mobility, strengthen your muscles, and reduce sensitivity to movements that may be triggering pain.  Ultimately we want to get to the core of the problem and prevent it coming back, helping you manage your symptoms going forward.

Results That Move You

  • Postural training to educate you on proper body alignment during daily activities.
  • Exercise therapy to strengthen muscles that support posture, particularly the core and upper back.
  • Manual therapy to release tight muscles and improve mobility.
  • Stretching routines to address muscle tightness in areas like the neck, shoulders, and lower back.
  • Ergonomic advice for setting up workstations or modifying your environment to support better posture.
